There is now a diffused hepatitis involving to a certain extent the lobules as well as the interlobular tissue. In the variety of syphilitic liver described by Gubler (miliary interstitial hepatitis), the small semi-transparent or yellow granulations, which are seen by the unaided eye, consist of a col- lection of small embryonic cells. They are small gummatous nodules.

The cirrhotic liver with a smooth surface occurring in adults, may or may not be hypertrophied. It is generally indurated and resists pressure by the nail. This is owing to the new connective tissue which separates the lobules, being dense, and consisting of fibres. While the friable tissue of recent cirrhosis is embryonic, composed of vessels with embryonic walls, and round cells with a soft fibrillar intercellular substance, the tis- sue of chronic cirrhosis consists of a dense, fibrous substance, composed of longitudinal fibres or of a laminated network of fibres.
