PAUL 231 irvev/j-a occurs several times in 1 Cor. The man 'of the soul ' (i/ry^i/co? avrfp, A. V. Carnal man) is contrasted with the man ' of the spirit ' (irvevnariKos avrjp \ I Cor. Ii. 14). The first Adam, it is said, with obvious reference to Gen. Ii. 7 ' became a living soul, the last Adam a quicken...ing spirit ' (1 Cor. Xv. 45). So in the same chapter there is a contrast between a body ' of the soul ' and a body ' of the spirit : ' (rwfjLo. IfsvyiKov and CTW/JLO. Trvev/LtctTiicov (1 Cor. Xv. 44). With this may be compared the phrase in S. James (iii. 15) :' This wisdom cometh not down from above, but is earthly, sensual (\jsvxiKt)), devilish. ' The ^rux^} covers more than our word soul: it means, first, the vital principle and probably it includes the emotions, and all those intellectual activities to which the senses contribute.
