But the Rainbow was in such a miserable condition that the wind and rain blew through her sides into the cabins that were allotted to us, so we applied and got leave to live on shore while the Regulus was in dock ; and I got... a furnished room at a Mrs. Loupe's, near the churchyard, at four shillings a week.
One of these days, while the Regulus was in dock, I went to London to inquire of Mr. Maude, a navy agent, about my Surinam prize money, which Desbro', the agent at Martinique, had told us of. This Mr. Maude had the paying of it in London, as the money had been remitted to England ; and when I arrived at Charing Cross I inquired of a person the way to Downing Street, and he told me. Immediately a genteel-looking man dressed in black came up, and in a whispering manner, as if afraid to be heard, said, " Sir, you should not ask information from any one in the street, or they may lead you wrong ; it's best to inquire at a shop ; but as you were asking the way to Downing Street, I am going that way and will be very glad to accompany you if you have no objections.
