The man who stood before him had been a devoted supporter in the last Na- tional Democratic Convention of Jefferson Davis, now President of the Southern Confederacy, the head and front of rebellion; had been a candidate for Democratic governor of Massachusetts against An- drew, and a few years before he had come into collision with a former governor of Massachusetts.
