Theodore Dehon, Rector of Trinity Church, Newport, and w^ho, like the 76 MEMORIAL OF THE clergyman whose place Dr. Crocker had oc- cupied five years before as lay reader, after- wards became Bishop of South Carolina. The professional life of the late Rector of St. John's is intimately connected with the growth of our Church in this Diocese. When he came here, there were but four Episcopal churches in Rhode Island ; all of them estab- lished under the auspices of the British Society for Propagat...ing the Gospel in the early part of the last centurv. Of the statistics of the Diocese, we have no record till the year 1813, w^hen it appears " that there were one hundred and forty-eight communicants in Bristol, one hundred and five in Newport, and fifty-nine in Providence. " No report is made by the church in Kingston. The four churches, planted a century and a half ago, had not seen one new parish added to their number until 1816, when St. Paul's Church, Pawtucket, was received into union with the Convention.
