What reading level is A Mother's Heart book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
When I was a little girl, everyone—women and men—wore a rose on their clothing in honor or in memory of their mothers. A red rose meant your mother was still living; a white rose signified she had passed away. I remember sitting in the church house, leaning against my grandmother’s ample bosom and smelling the sweetness of the white rose pinned to her dress. My grandfather had one just like it pinned to his shirt. Mother’s rose was red, as was mine and my sister’s. We would bend our heads fo...rward until we could bury our noses in the roses pinned to our dresses, then look at each other and giggle. We didn’t “get” how special it was to be able to wear that red rose, or how empty lives became as our loved ones aged and passed away. These years, as so many other things from past generations, the tradition is slowly dying. It’s rare to see people wearing flowers on Mother’s Day, and if they do, it’s often a big showy corsage made of orchids. When I do see roses pinned to people’s Sunday finest, I can’t help but remember the sweetness of times gone by, and the safety of being held beneath my grandmother’s arm with the soft scent of roses swirling around my head.
