It was some hours after noon when the tired moun- taineers aroused them...selves from sleep, prepared a hasty meal, and resumed their journey. Their way was still along the picturesque Oconolufta, the road following the windings of the stream, and in places wedged so closely between the river and the overhanging cliffs as to scarcely allow of the passage of a wheeled vehicle. At the dis- tance of about ten miles from the mouth of the river, they came suddenly upon a broad, open valley in which were evidences of civilization in log farm-houses, fruit orchards, patches of corn, and small herds of the diminu- tive horse that is styled the *' Indian pony.
