As they drew near, one of the Lieutenants urged the Captain to have the long Tom, as they called one of their guns, fired upon the barges ; but the Captain told him it Avould be of no use, as they were already in their power. The Lieutenant then went below, and they supposed put a match to the iMag- azine, and the Privateer blew up. They two were the only 47 men on board who escaped with their lives. They "Wcrc ?E«cle prisoners and sent to Halifax, and on account of the miracu- lous preservatio...n of their lives, they -were allo^ved the freedom of the city on their parole of honor.
They said that -when the Privateer blew up they were stand- ing upon the deck, and the first notice they had of the catas- trophe, they found themselves flying at a great hight in the air. Happily they fell into the water without being much in- jured, and being good swimmers they succeeded in reaching the land without much trouble, as the distance from the Pri- vateer was not great. They wandered about in the woods for several days, not daring to make themselves known to the in- habitants, but Inuiger at last drove them to do it.
