During the forenoon of the 18th there was, I think, a partial eclipse ofthe sun, which lasted three hours. The unusual darkness which prevailedastonished us beyond measure (our minds being taken up with events morestartling than astronomical phenomena) till reference to an almanacexplained the mystery. The eclipse had, we were told, an alarming effecton the mutineers, who attributed the phenomenon to some supernaturalagency. The darkness no doubt worked on their superstitious fears, andhastened... their flight from the city on which the wrath of the Almightyhad descended.
_September 19_. --On the 19th operations in front of the Palace Gate werecontinued, a heavy fire being kept up against that place, while the 60thRifles and others, perched on the tops of houses, took unerring aim atthe rebels clustered in the open space. The same evening, also, theexertions of the right column were rewarded by the capture of the Burnbastion, with little loss on our side.
It was now quite evident that the baffled insurgents were retiring fromDelhi in great numbers, mostly by the south side, few crossing thebridge of boats by day owing to it being commanded by our guns.
