It consists of a long glass tube, bent twice at right an- gles, somewhat in the form of the letter U. One arm is furnished with a scale of 100 degrees, and each terminates in a bulb. The tube contains a small quantity of sulphu- ric acid, colored red, and so disposed that when both bulbs are of the same temperature it stands at on the scale. Let either bulb be heated ever so little more than the other, and the expansion of the air within will drive the liquid down and cause it to ascend the opposite arm to a distance measured by the scale.
