The satellites of Saturn, owing to their great distance from us, appear very small, and consequently, their real magnitudes are not well known. The 7th is the largest, and according to Sir John Herschel, is nearly equal in size to the planet Mars.
From the 7th, or most distant, they are said to diminish inward.
The orbits of the satellites are in the plane of Saturn's ring, except that of the 7 th, which is considerably inclined to it ; and since the ring coincides with the planet's equator, which latter plane makes an angle of 29° (146) with Saturn's orbit, it fol- lows that they will be but seldom eclipsed, and only when Saturn is in or near one of the nodes of their orbits.
