Under his lead, they did what might be called research work, their researches being made at every sort of public institution for the relief or betterment of their fellow men. Be- ginning with the nearest county jail and almshouse, they made visits to a large number of the principal asylums, pris- ons, penitentiaries, reformatories of the State of New York, took notes, heard what their professor had to say on each, asked questions, and took part in dis- cussions.
