The Uzbeks of Kunduz have genuine Tartar features, though the physiognomy of their chiefs is becoming softened by intermar...riage with the Tajik, a Caucasian race whom I believe to be the indi- genous inhabitants of Persia, and perhaps of Trans- oxiana also, and who are now found widely scattered on both sides of the Paropamasian chain. A Tajik is not permitted to marry the daughter of an Uzbek; but this unjust distinction is the only social differ- ence that now exists between them. The Uzbeks are Suni Mohamedans, and consider an intolerant persecution of the other sect as the best evidence of the sincerity of their own faith and of their attach- ment to the Prophet.
