Many were not killed, and endeavoured to escape from their tomb, but only to fall by our rifles. Seeing our success, we set up a shout of joy, and our foes out of spite immediately began a furious fusilade all round, which, however, did no harm.
August I6th. — Two of our artillery officers were wounded yesterday. Lieutenant J. Alexander and Lieutenant Bonham. The latter had recovered from his first wound at Chinhutt, and now received a con- tusion at his side. Of our artillery officers we have ...now none but Lieutenant Thomas (Madras) and Lieutenant Cunlifie who remain untouched. Bryce and Lewin are dead, and Captain Simons is dan- gerously wounded, and M'Farlane, Clare Alexander, and J. Alexander, and Bonham are in hospital. Of our gunners, out of ninety, half are already laid low, and among them a civilian named Wells, a first-rate fellow, who never failed to go where danger was to be faced. He was shot through the head while serv- ing his gun.
