- 69 - Of this incident we have a record in a Tavo- letta di Gabella of 1455 by an unknown artist, representing the Annunciation. On high, seated upon a cloud, with her arms meekly crossed upon her breast and with an open book upon her knees, is the Virgin, while the Angel of the Lord bows before her, as he pronounces the words : '' Hail, thou that art highly favoured. ' 1 On the right and on the left stand gigantic figures. That to the left is St. Bernard of Clairvaux, wh...ose father per- ished in the first crusade, and who himself, after the capture of Edessa, preached a second holy war, and by his marvellous eloquence kindled anew the crusading madness throughout France and Germany. To the right is Pope Calixtus in pontifical robes, in the act of blessing the kneeling multitude of youths and maidens, clothed in white, with red crosses upon their shoulders, and olive garlands upon their heads.
It is curious to note that Siena possesses another picture of this Pope, and that there, as in the Tavoletta, he is represented in the presence of our Lady who recommends her beloved city to his care.
