It would have been cruel in me to refuse the poor woman my good offices ; I ther...efore sent «iy name in and desired to speak with the comniander. On being asked to walk in, I found him sitting upon a Bofa, drinking chocolate between tw^o harlots. Hav- ing related my business, he said abruptly, " How can you, a French citizen, ask the release, or the life of a Dutchman ? If the people of this country had it in their power, they would fall upon us and mas- sacre us all en masse^ and it is well when an oppor- tunity offers, to revenge ourselves a little in detaHJ^ I then applied to his beUes to back my supplication with their influence, adding, that his poor wife, more dead tWi alive, was expecting the issue at my lodgings* They good naturedly enough joined me, and we succeeded in obtaining an order for the Dutchman's release; who, during dinner, came and thanked me for his life, as he said, from the threats held out, he expected nothing less than to be shot that very day.
