BOOK IV. THE NORMANS IN IRELAND. CHAPTER I. DERMID McMURROGH'S NEGOTIATIONS AND SUCCESS--THE FIRSTEXPEDITION OF THE NORMANS INTO IRELAND. The result of Dermid McMurrogh's interview with Henry II. , in Aquitaine, was a royal letter, addressed to all hissubjects, authorizing such of them as would, to enlistin the service of the Irish Prince. Armed alone withthis, the expelled adulterer, chafing for restorationand revenge, retraced his course to England. He was atthis time some years beyond three ...score, but the snowsof age had no effect in cooling his impetuous blood; hisstature is described as almost gigantic; his voice loudand harsh; his features stern and terrible. His crueland criminal character we already know. Yet it is butjust here to recall that much of the horror and odiumwhich has accumulated on his memory is posthumous andretrospective. Some of his cotemporaries were no betterin their private lives than he was; but then they had nopart in bringing in the Normans. Talents both for peaceand war he certainly had, and there was still a feelingof attachment, or at least of regret, cherished towardshim among the people of his patrimony.
