88 CAOUTCHOUC AND GUTTA PERCHA. With when the work of vulcanizing is done with a solution of chloride of sulphur. But chloride of sul- phur should never be used by itself, as the pure arti- cle exerts too energetic an effect upon the caoutchouc, and for this reason a strongly reduced solution of it should be used in all cases. The work can be done at an ordinary temperature, and the manufacturer has it in his power to proceed with the vulcanization to any desired extent. But only thin articles ...can be changed into vulcanite by this method. If, for instance, plates having a diam- eter of a few centimetres are to be changed, it is best to employ the method of incorporating the sulphur with the caoutchouc, and subject the compound to the burning process. Chloride of sulphur, the preparation and properties of which will be given further on, possesses the faculty of quickly penetrating caoutchouc and changing it into vulcanite. The articles prepared from caoutchouc are placed in a weak solution of it, and allowed to remain for a sufficient time, when they are removed and thrown into warm water, or dried in a current of warm air.
