The os uteri, on her admission was dilated to the size of a shilling and relaxed ; in which state it remained until within six hours of delivery, when half a drachm of the powdered ergot of rye was given, infused in two ounces of hot water. From the commencement the uterine action was very feeble ; occasionally she complained of acute pain, accompanied by a feeling of forcing down. The ergot did not appear to produce any increase of uterine action, yet the mouth of the 278 PRACTICAL OBSERVATION...S womb became, in the course of six hours after its exbibition, tolerably dilated and relaxed. As the pulse was very quick and feeble, the child dead, and the os uteri in a state to admit of delivery, the head was perforated, and a putrid child, about the 5th month of gestation brought away almost without any assistance ; it was nothing more than a soft mass, being so completely broken down by putrefaction. Symptoms of abdominal inflammation set in from the period of delivery, and continued unabated, till death took place on the 9th day.
