All great deeds and sayings of unknown origin were ascribed to them and there- after recorded as their teachings. Of course this was not all equally easy. Some of the books and stories gained their title rank with great difficulty. There was often much opposition. But most of the records of opposition have perished and have not reached us. Had it not been for the ambition to increase their authority by making the body of sacred classics as large as possible, such books as Ecclesias- tes, Esther, Song of Solomon, and Ezekiel would not have been included.
