In the same proportion as the carpel diminished the bract expanded, not only in respect to size but much more with reference to structure. In the inferior flowers there was on the outer side of the bract, above its base, a round protuberance of a yellowish green colour, which possessed in its interior a hollow cavity filled with pollen grains ; the upper portion of the bract stood, like the carpel-leaf, erect. In those bracts which approached still more to normal anthers, (and this was the case in most of them) there were upon the outer side two protuberances, containing pollen, of a long oval form and yellow colour, which at their hinder end were partially separated from the bracts as in Araucaria.
