" cried Philippe. It is true that, seen as he was on the threshold of the convent, at the farther end of the sombre path, the poor monk did present a beggarly appearance. But the old man's glance soon corrected this first impression. Though his eyes were not large, and their color, of a muddy green, was indistinct, a flame burned within them which would soon have quenched the jesting spirit of my young companion if he had had the slightest experience in judging of the human countenance.
