23. The Legislative Assembly. — The new body created by the Constitution was called the Legislative Assembly. Its members were chosen for two years, and its first session began on the 1st of October, 1791. It was divided into several parties, of which the chief were the Girondins (zhe-ron-dang'), or Girondists, the Monta- guards (mon-tan-yar), or Mountain Party, and the Feuil- lants {fuh-yahng'), or Constitutionalists; but it was plain, from the first, that its general sentiment was one of hostil- ity to the king.* This was soon apparent by the extreme measures which it took, but which the king vetoed.
