The atonement of Christ is so applied to the souls of believers, that they feel its vast importance, and are moulded into tlie image of the gospel. The purest morals, without this transformation by the renewal of the mind to prove what is the good, perfect and acceptable will of God, can never entitle one to the rest which remains to the people of God, This is prepared for none but his children by adoption.
Every person prepared to enjoy heavenly rest sees his need of a Savior, and the sufficie...ncy and excellency of Jesus Christ as mediator, and enters into a cordial covenant with him. TiU his heart is renewed by divine grace, the sinner never enjoys any true comfort in being in covenant vath Christ, nor can it he said, strictly speaking, that he is in covenant wdth him.
Christ has indeed assured us of his consent, by the free offers lie has made, but the agreement is not fully made till we, in the most cordial manner, give our consent. The real saint gives himself wholly to the disposal of his Lord, who has bought him with Iiis blood, believing, that he will support him uader every conflict and at last bring him to his glory.
