Their demands since 1835 had become more and more exacting, until they practically dominated the general government. Three days later Webster replied in his famous 7th of March speech, 2 an appeal for the preservation of the Union. He sympathized with the South, fully agreeing that it had many and serious grievances against the North, chief of which were northern violations of the fugitive slave act.
