Lysander, the Spartan commander, in cold blood put to death the four thousand Athenian citizens among the captives. This slaughter marks the end. Athens still held out, despair- ing but stubborn, until starved into submission by a terrible siege. Corinth and Thebes wished to raze it from the earth, but Sparta had no mind ]to do away with so useful a check upon those cities. She compelled Athens to renounce all claims to empire, to give up all alliances, to surrender all her ships but twelve.
