They asked time for deliberation till the following morning. The remainder of the day and all night they spent in tears, and, while sobbing, embraced each other. At dawn, next day, the citizens for the last time assembled at the Vietsche. Subsequently, three hundred families, belonging to the better class of citizens of Pskov, were removed to different Moscovite towns, and in the place of the exiles were sent as many families of merchants from the towns of the Moscow principality. One of the first measures of the Moscovite government was to introduce the payment of duty in the interior of Pskov. Hitherto trade there had been quite free.
