" These were not swung across the street by a rope or wire as is now the practice, but were dis- played in the only way in which the United States flag should be floated — from a mast or liberty-pole. The first campaign flag raised in Keene bore the names of Scott and Graham, the last candidates ever nominated by the Whig party for the ofiices of president and vice president.
