We must not shrink from this solemn duty. We dare not shrink from it.
We cannot lose sight of the great truth that nations are accountable as well as individuals, and that they too must meet the stern responsibilities of their moral character ; they too must encounter the penalty of violated law in the more extended sphere adapted to their physical condition.
" Let the solemn question come home to the bosom and business of every citizen of this great republic — ' What have I done — what has this generation done — for the advancement of civil and religious liberty ?' (Applause.) " It is in view of this responsibility, of our obligations to the infinite Source of all our peace, prosperity, and happiness, of our duty to fulfil the great mission of liberty committed to our hands, that I would insist, cost what it may, on the establishment of a permanent, independent republic in Mexico.
