To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Patrick's Day 1917. THE BALKANS, April 2nd, 1917. My dear Tedd^e, We were holding a portion of the outpost on the Struma up to a few days ago, and even our most hardened warriors dubbed our tour as "exciting/' It was in this way. Under the very nose of the Bulgar guns, which looked directly down upon us from the hills, we never have enjoyed much peace in this particularly salubrious (?) locality. Our friends across the way, in fact, frequently became annoyed with us after raids etc. , and forci...bly impressed upon us, by means of shells and other objectionable things, that it would be pleasant for us if we moved back a few miles, preferably, say, to the other side of the Struma River during our apparently indefinite stay in the valley. It was on St. Patrick's day (March i;th) that he treated us to the most furious bombardment he has been guilty of during our long acquaintance up to the present. Along the whole front he suddenly let loose his guns about mid-day, and kept going without a break, in a fashion we had hardly thought him capable of, until dusk.
