Conley. Harris, of the Medical Reserve Corps, has in- vented one which is simpler and more portable than most 180 MILITARY HYGIENE others, while perhaps equalling the best in efficiency (Fig. 30). A rock pile crematory (Fig. 38) may be utilized; or, an incinerator may be improvised by digging a fire trench, preferably on a hillside, and burning out shallow pans in which the excreta have been deposited. These measures, while practicable, are very apt to be more troublesome than valuable. FIG. 30.... Incinerator for excreta, Harris type. (B) Reed Trough. In this system the excreta are re- ceived in a long trough partly filled with water, from which the contents are transferred daily to a tank wagon by means of a hand-pump (Fig. 31). The trough is made of gal- vanized iron, curved to facilitate cleansing, and deeper at one end for ready emptying. It is long enough to accommo- date seven seats, which latter have self-closing covers. The covers are made to fall shut of their own weight by nailing a DISPOSAL OF WASTES IN CAMP 181 board longitudinally above the seat at a point which allows them to be raised less than 90 degrees.
