The most brilliant examples are seen in the lungs, the serous cavities of the body, and in the meninges, probably because in those situations a great number of bacilli can be read- ily brought into contact with the tissues. While these are the typical effects of ...the tubercle bacillus, they must not be regarded as totally distinct reactions, but only as the appropriate reac- tions to the different degrees of intensity with which the bacilli affect the tissues. If the person lives and acquires a little more resistance, the acute inflammatory lesion is soon surrounded by tubercles and tuberculous granu- lation tissue which appear in its marginal portions and represent an ineffec- tual attempt at healing. In every case the tubercles and tuberculous gran- ulation tissue develop as the effect of an initial injiuy and acute reactive inflammation which may be inconspicuous.
