If Right be a growth, the result of de- velopment, we may inquire, Where did the idea come from what was its genesis ? The term evidently is applied, as I have said, to that which one ought to do. Now, however men may differ as to ivhat they ought to do, however they may differ as to the absolute character of right, they agree substantially as to the existence of duty or obligation. We are led to inquire, then, How can we know what we ought to do ? There are two general theories as to the knowl...edge of moral distinctions. The first of these may be called The TJjeory of Right. 41 1. The a priori, or intuitional view. 2. The a posteriori, or empirical view. Neither of these I regard as wholly sat- isfactory, but they may be stated as fol- lows : The intuitional theory of knowledge maintains the absolute character of Right and Wrong. This absolute Right and Wrong is known intuitively, consequently the knowledge is uniform, or should be uniform. The problem of the intuitionist is to explain the diversity of moral judg- ments among men.
