8. The Flow Is Blood Stained. — This is also a relatively frequent occurrence in catheterization. It may be said to be constant, because microscopic examination of catheterized urine invariably reveals some blood cells. Their presence is easily explained; the catheter in passing through the ureteral interior necessarily injures the ureteral mucosa to some degree and thus usually produces a slight hemorrhage. This may be negligible or simply microscopic; on the other hand, it may be much more important especially when the kidneys do not function- ate steadily and when the renal pelvis is not properly cleansed by a suf- ficient quantity of urine.
