Previously to applying the varnish, a portion of it should be poured out in a well- dried and warm conical cup, similar to an egg-cup (Fig. 107), having a ring, with a small wire strained across it, fitted to its mouth, so that, when the brush has been dipped into the varnish, the superfluous fluid is readily disengaged by drawing the brush across the wire. The cup, previously to receiving the varnish, may be gently heated before... a fire, in order to free it from all moisture, and render the varnish as fluid as possible. It is convenient to have several metallic rings of various diameters fitted on different sized varnish cups.
