As to collecting men in villages, such as Gallipolis, those that have been formed on the frontiers of Louisiana or Canada, and have been left to shift for themselves, have gene- rally dwindled, and sooner or later disappeared ; while plain men, from the Briiish isles or Germany, v.ho have pierced the heart of the forest with their families only, ...and even ventured alone into the Indian terri- toiy, have generally made good their footing, and have prospered and multiplied.
An example of this truth is to be found in the his- tory of the French settlement at Vincennes, on the Wabash, which I visited after leaving Gallipolis. I was prompted to more careful observations at this place, because I not only felt a general interest in the welfi\re of these my countrymen, but was anxious to hnow what kind of asylum these regions were adapted to afford to those natives of France who might hereafter be inclined or obliged to take refuge in them.
