That, however, did not prevent the people, when the usual period of the elections ar- rived, from proceeding, according to custom, to the choice of the alcaides. The inhabitants of Caravalleda regarded this injury as done to themselves individually. They unanimous- ly adopted the laudable resolution of abandoning a city where the law had suffered so unwarrantable an out- rage; they all retired to Valencia and Caraccas. The city which they deserted became the haunt of reptiles and ravenous birds.
