Besides, Herculaneum was buriedin lava, which is so hard that the streets of Naples are paved with square blocl^ of it, which look and feel as solid as granite. Fompei^ on the other side of Vesuvius, was covered with ashes.
Great excavations have been made there, and smaller ones are still in progress. From the rear of Vesuvius, there stretches a chain of hills along the shore of the Bay, for about twenty miles out to the ocean, where they seem to tenninate abruptly.
