To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

There was a special train from Waterloo, and we had as fellow- occupants of our carriage an old gentleman and his wife. We were all presented with a book containing the names of the numerous guests, and were studying the lists with some interest. Suddenly the lady said to her husband, " Oh, I see Sir Frederick Bridge and his young wife are here. I should so like to meet them." Now, what was to be done ? There we were with our unknown fellow-guests, shut up for upwards of an hour.
What else migh
...t be said about us ? Was I to run the risk of hearing things which might make it rather trying for us and our companions ? So I turned at once to the lady, and said, " That is not very difficult, for I am Sir Frederick Bridge." The astonishment of the lady was great. " But you are not Sir Frederick," she said. " Oh, yes, I am," I replied, " and this is my ' young wife '." It turned out that the lady knew many of my wife's people, and we spent much time on board together, with many a pleasant joke about the scene in the railway carriage.
