When he had finished he looked into the astonished face of Mr. Herndon and asked him, "How do you like that?" It was the speech that was to be delivered before the Republican convention, avowing his candidacy for the Senate. The paragraph was as follows: "Gentlemen of the Convention: If we could first know where we are and whither we are tending, we could then better judge what to do, and how to do it.
