In the winter of 1894, in response to a demand voiced almost universally by the press and the people of Illinois, the General Assembly made provision for the transfer of the National Lincoln Monument and grounds to the permanent care and custody of the State. The new law puts the monument into the charge of a board of control, consisting of the Governor of the State, the State Super- intendent of Public Instruction and the State Treasurer.
