Just as the priest is starting the service, li'azeppa stops the proceedings, declaring that Olinska " in heart and spirit, and by long previous vows, breathed from the verj' bottom of her soul, is mine, and any other union, by tyranny accomplished, is perjury and pollution." Mazeppa seizes his sweetheart, which is the signal for his troops to attack and kill the Poles.
