The zeal and successful labours of a few almost inspired men, the chief among whom is Dr. Liebig, have, within a very short time, furnished a vast amount of results in this new province of knowledge, so that there scarcely remains a product of organized existence which has not been separated into its primary constituents, and the nature and atTniities of these with other bodies strictly de- termined. By such exact researches into the composition of vegeta- ble sul)stances, soils, manures, atmospheric elements and agencies administering to growth and development, chemistrv has brought agriculture to assume the character of a science.
