The air was heavy and sultry in the hush before the storm. Throughout the first session little or nothing was done. Mr. Adams had no question of the duty of the Republican party to pre- sent an undivided front to the various sec- tions of its opponents ; and he had no doubt who should be selected as standard-bearer.
His conviction had been growing for many years that Mr. Seward held more completely than any public man the key to the situa- tion, — that he alone had the penetration, the knowledge, the energy, the probity that were now required to steer the ship of state Digitized by VjOOQ IC 49 through storm or sunshine into still waters.
