I know, of course, that it is difficult to provide these things where population is less dense, but the difficulties of such a task should simply incite us to efforts to overcome them. In some sections of the country many millions of people suffer from malarial diseases, from typhoid fever, from the hookworm, from tuberculosis, and from other maladies. I referred to this matter in my annual report to the President, and urged consideration of and action upon it at the earliest possible moment. I... have been very much interested to note that a bill has just been introduced into Congress providing for cooperation between the Federal Government and the States in the matter of improving rural health along lines similar to those provided for in the agricul- tural extension bill. I take the liberty of suggesting the importance of this matter to this Governors' conference and of asking tliat it receive their earnest attention.
