To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

^"^ We cx)ine to the climax, and the catastrophe. In May, 1872, the Liberal Republican convention, at Cincinnati, nominated Greeley for the presidency. This futile but not unpatriotic movement was a Republican revolt against President Grant, led by eminent and high-minded men whose confidence was shaken, perhaps too soon, by the mistakes of his first administration and the sinister influ- ence of worthless camp-followers about him. The Cin- cinnati platform, unexceptionable in tone and characte...r, followed Greeley in declaring for universal amnesty and impartial suffrage, and Greeley's letter of acceptance ex- pressed his belief that the people. North and South, were ready to " clasp hands across the bloody chasm" — a phrase that passed into a popular shibboleth. Forthwith upon this nomination all the vials of partisan wrath were opened and poured out upon him. He had asserted his independence of party, the mortal sin of politicians. All that he had done for the party, and for the country, was forgotten in a moment.
