He became intimately connected with every movement tending to its growth and prosperity. He found his most congenial employment in promoting the cause of educa- tion, and when he was elected a regent of the University he devoted the best activities of his mind to its work. Upon becoming Chancellor, he infused by his indomitable energy greater power for educational and scholarly use- fulness into all the departments of the University. He was prominent at convocations of teachers and at college commencements, with his words of cheer and advice. The enlightened views, the high public spirit and the great executive capacity which he displayed during the eight years that he presided over this great state University, gave fresh life, impetus and vigor to the educational interests of the state and will forever ally his name to its institutions of learning.
