He had cultivated no drawing- room arts ; he knew nothing of the assiduities of ante-chambers ; he was incapable of intrigue or flattery ; he was as free from servility as from arrogance ; he had not merely a speculative lik- ing for, but he was a practical exemplification of, democratic principles. The oratorical tempera- ment, which he possessed in so high a degree, harmonizes not with the cunning or even the unsleeping and tireless discretion of diplomacy, whose methods were foreign to the guileless frank- ness of that noble nature.
