To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
It is not generally known that Mr. Binney's relations with Mr. Sergeant had been strained for a number of years, and that there had been no intercourse between them, and I extract from his speech a passage or two which, if carefully read, discloses the fact. "No trivial incongruities of feeling or opinion, no mis- interpretation, however arising, no petty gust, no cloud of a hand's breadth, which may and will chill or overcast the common sky of the truest friends in a life of fifty-five years, ...ever for a single instant disturbed the foundations of my regard for him or even reached the depths in which they were laid. These foundations were laid upon his principles as I well knew them fifty years ago. They were laid deep upon that sure basis and they were beyond the reach of change or chance, as his principles were." The day after Mr. Sergeant's death Mr. Binney called at his house, inquired for the family and left his card. Under the circumstances it seems to me that Mr. Binney's speech, which he said would be, and which was, his last, and his action at that time, showed an extraordinary instance of mag- nanimity and power to overlook trivial matters.
