This contest of the Mississippi in- volves this great national contest ; that is, whether one part of the continent shall govern the other. The Northern States have the majority, and will endeavor to retain it. This is, therefore, a contest for dominion, for empire." ^ Patrick Henry cited this same sectional spectre, in order to frighten the Virginia Convention from the ratification of the Constitution.
